My New Smoothie Obsession!


Now I have never been a super fit girl, but I have tried to take good care of myself and consider myself relatively healthy. I eat a primarily vegetarian diet, cook a lot of my own foods and do my share of moving and shaking on a regular basis. But moderation has never been a strong suit of mine and sugar has been a consistent weakness that I have been unable to quash.

Until now! (OK, maybe this sounds a bit like an ad, but I’m really excited!)

Because the all or nothing approach seems to work best for me, I have recently joined the clean eating revolution. While you can find a lot of iterations of what clean eating is, I prefer the simplest: whole foods only. Nothing processed. Add to that no meat, fish or dairy. So far it has been life changing. My cravings for bread and sweets have almost completely disappeared.

I do have a secret weapon, though. Smoothies! In just a few weeks I have become a wiz at preparing healthy, delicious and energizing blended drinks. My only complaint is that I haven’t found them sooner. So for the last 3 weeks I have been making breakfast smoothies that make me feel great. No, really, I feel better than I have in a long time. I’m not having sugar crashes or afternoon energy drains. I credit a big part of that to my new breakfast routine.

Because clean, healthy eating is becoming an integral part of my minimal lifestyle, I’ll be posting my favorite recipes along with tips for combining fruits and greens. Let’s get started with my new favorite green libation.

1 cup kale (frozen)
1/2 cup spinach (frozen)
1/2 carrot
1/4 of an avocado
1/2 green apple
1 cup pineapple (fresh or frozen)
1 cup water

Directions: add items in order, blend until smooth.

Tip: freezing kale, spinach, parsley, etc will allow you to keep it much longer and blend easier.
